1.The history of the city

 

The stone aged - and bronze aged settlements were found on the territory Nordhausen in modern times.

A rich grave of a nobleman of lateroman times was found in the Sundhäuserstraße.

In 780 - the "Franken" built yard of the empire at "Frauenberg" .Duke Henry I from Sachsen built the castle from 910 to 915. He presented Nordhausen his wife Mathilde.

In 927 Henry I gave the castle " Nordhusia " as a present to his wife Mathilda.

Nordhausen became a free imperial city and was a important centre of the German kingdom. In 1927 the town celebrated the 1000th anniversary.

During World War II, in April 3rd and 4th 1945 Nordhausen was destroyed by bombs. 8800 people lost their lives. Then German was divided up into zones.

 

 

 

 

 

 

2 Economical structure

 

The city Nordhausen has 50000 inhabitants. Nordhausen belongs to Thuringia. Nordhausen is a centre of economy - and traffic. Nordhausen became a centre of the region.

There are spirit distîlleries and the chewing tobacco industry. Since 1507 Nordhausen has got the Harz tradition of spirit distilleries and the tobacco industry.

The GDR factory produced the "Nordhäuser Doppelkorn" a well-knwn liquor. This firm was taken over by " Eckes AG" in 1991

The tobacco industry went back in the eighteenth century. Companies like "Hanewacker", "Kneiff", "Lerche", "Grimm & Triepel" determined the production of the chewing tobacco industry, but it went back in favour of the tobacco industry.

Today " Reemtsma " produces produces cigarettes and supplies the foreign market.

But it will close his production in the year 2002. The tobacco industry dies out in Nordhausen.
